Lack of Success in the DSM

DSM diagnoses related to a lack of success include Specific Learning Disorder (SLD), which affects academic achievement, and several conditions that can lead to social or professional underachievement, such as Avoidant Personality Disorder and Dependent Personality Disorder. Other related conditions include Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder, which impairs social interactions and success, and Anxiety Disorders and Depressive Disorders, which significantly interfere with daily functioning. The term "failure to launch" is not a DSM diagnosis, but is often associated with these conditions.

Specific Learning Disorder (SLD)

This neurodevelopmental disorder affects academic skills and can result in a lack of success in school.

It is diagnosed based on persistent difficulties in areas like reading, writing, or mathematics, which significantly interfere with academic or occupational achievement.

Personality Disorders

Avoidant Personality Disorder: Characterized by extreme sensitivity to rejection, a feeling of inadequacy, and social inhibition, leading to avoidance of activities that involve significant interpersonal contact.

Dependent Personality Disorder: Involves a pervasive need to be taken care of, leading to submissive and clinging behavior and difficulty making decisions or starting projects due to a lack of self-confidence.

Other Relevant Diagnoses

Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder: This condition involves persistent difficulties in the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication, which can impair social relationships and participation.

Anxiety Disorders and Depressive Disorders: Excessive worry or persistent sadness can lead to an inability to function effectively in daily activities, including work and social situations.

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD): Perfectionism associated with OCPD can make it impossible to finish projects because the individual cannot reach an acceptable level of perfection.

Other Related Conditions

Failure to Launch: While not a formal DSM diagnosis, this describes a situation where a young adult has difficulty launching into independent adulthood. It is often a symptom of an underlying condition like an anxiety disorder, depression, or personality disorder.

Failure Schema: A psychological concept, not a DSM diagnosis, involving a deep-seated belief of being inadequate or incompetent. It can lead to underachievement, procrastination, and a lack of motivation.
